Westwood College is a nationwide educational institution, focusing on providing a quality education to working professionals in pursuit of their first college degree, or secondary degrees in areas of professional interest. Westwood offers two types of learning environments; online courses and campus based courses.
For many working professionals, on campus programs provide the ideal educational environment, with convenient proximity to the downtown business districts in six major metropolitan areas in the US. Within each of these major markets, Westwood has anywhere from two to four campuses. The Los Angeles area boasts four urban campuses, as does Chicago. Texas has one each in Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth, while Denver, Atlanta, and the Washington DC area each have two.
Westwood focuses their programs of study on specific career paths, a divergence from traditional liberal arts universities, but one which time-constrained working professionals appreciate. A typical student at Westwood can earn their bachelor’s degree in less than 3 years, as opposed to the more typical 4 year program at a traditional university. Westwood offers 28 individual programs through six schools, the school of business, the school of design, the school of industrial services, the school of justice, the school of technology, and the school of healthcare. Areas of focus are business management, computer animation and graphics, interior design, automotive technology, surveying, criminal justice, information systems and technologies, medical assisting and many more. Additionally, Westwood offers a master of business administration (MBA) degree through online courses.
Complimenting Westwood College’s programs geared towards business professionals, Westwood also operates two campuses focused on trade-specific education. The campuses are run under the Redstone College brand, and cater to three distinct areas of education: aircraft and avionic technologies, construction management, and industrial service technologies. These Redstone College campuses are located in Los Angeles near the Los Angeles International Airport, and in Denver adjacent to the Jefferson County Airport to capitalize on the real world environments important to student achievement.
For students whose schedules or geographic locations don’t allow attendance at one of the nineteen Westwood or Redstone campuses, Westwood offers an online university option. Taking classes online offers students a chance to earn degrees not otherwise offered in their region, while choosing a course schedule that fits in with their professional and personal obligations.
Westwood College is in the top tier of online, professionally oriented universities, counting among its main competition colleges such as University of Phoenix, Devry, and ITT Tech. In the competition for students, Westwood relies principally on mass media outreach to attract interested students, and to answer their questions about the university’s programs or specific campuses. Westwood employs broadcast media methods with both radio and television advertisements, generally just prior to a heavy enrollment period. Westwood also has heavily invested in online advertising, first developing a robust and informative website with detailed information on programs, campuses, and the online programs, followed by an extensive pay per click (PPC) marketing program designed to find prospective students who have been actively seeking out information on college education. Westwood also has ramped up its efforts in online display, or banner, advertising, placing both image, flash, and video ads on sites frequented by their most likely future students.
Westwood College’s efforts in both creating an exemplary career oriented university, and aggressively expanding into new markets has been extremely successful, and the University was recently ranked in the top ten online universities by the Online Education Database. While this is quite an accomplishment, Westwood’s prospects are even more promising. As one of the most well known universities both online and in major metro areas, Westwood College is starting the 21st century ideally poised to take advantage of the evolving role of education in our new information based millennium.
